In the area of education, the District counts 202 nursery schools where 6557 Children, of whom 58,2% are girls go for education. The number of ladies teaching at this level is also higher than the men they represent 59,4%. The District also has 80 primary schools in which the number of girls is slightly higher than the number of boys (50,6%). These pupils are distributed among 1.155 Classrooms, that means an overage of 72 pupils per classroom. The reality of the matter is that 7.193 pupils attend their class under trees! A secondary level, we have 15 settlements with 6433 pupils of whom 43,6% are girls. The overage of the students per classroom is 60 with a rate of qualified teachers reaching 34,1%. These figures bring clearly out a crucial need of Classrooms at the secondary level just as it is the case for the primary especially because the level of the basic education is going to be 9 years. Four schools only have been able to launch that program, there is urgency to integrate this program in all secondary schools in Nyagatare by next year 2008. The District also has 2 institutions providing college education (Umutara Polytechnique et Nursing school) with a total of 426 students of whom 44,6% girls. Unlikely to the Nursery and Primary levels, the number of girls is lower to the boys‟ in secondary as well as in Colleges. This gape between sexes increases among the teachers at all levels except Nursery schools. Women teachers represent 31,3% at primary, 23,9% at secondary and 16,7% in Colleges. Hence, much efforts should be invested in encouraging girls and women to attend secondary and colleges especially sciences and technology. With 13 regard to building the capacity of students who did not get a chance to finish secondary level and help them create their own jobs rather agricultural, the District is intending to set up 3 modern CFJs. |
